The
South and Centre
A ‘must’ for every mauritius-travaller.
Most highlights in one day: Floreal, crater
of Trou aux Cerfs, Village Garden, Curepipe,
Mare aux Vacoas, holy lake Grand Bassin,
Black River Gorge, Chamarel (seven-colored
earth), view point Le Morne, Casela bird
park.
Only a few minutes away from Curepipe,
Floreal Square is a beautiful
destination which includes a Textile Museum,
a shopping center and a café. The
Floreal Textile Museum illustrates the
various steps of garments making. Be enchanted
by the soft touch of materials, the brilliance
of colors, the technical aspect of machinery
and the capability of the people at work.
Twelve duty free boutiques and
factory shops welcome you inside for a
complete range of products. At Floreal
Café terrace, relax and enjoy a
good meal or simply drink in the peaceful
atmosphere of the centre.

 |
A stop in Curepipe, where
there are numerous duty-free shops,
diamond cutting workshops, model ship
factories and a hand-made oriental carpet
shop. Watches, craft, paintings and top
designer garments are also available at
competitive prices.

| The
South East
The traditional Mauritian village of Mahebourg
• National History Museum
• Short sea crossing to Ile-aux-Aigrettes
(Mauritius Wildlife Sanctuary), home to
the rare pink pigeon and indigenous vegetation.
• Spectacular views of Grand Port
mountain range and islands of the lagoon.
• Crocodile park- At Rivière
des Anguilles in the South, the Vanilla
Crocodile Park is home to crocodiles imported
from Madagascar and other reptiles.
|
Mahebourg
Situated in the South East of the island,
some fifteen minutes from the airport,
this historical village shelters the Naval
Museum witness of the
great naval battle at Mahebourg between
the French and English in 1810 for the
occupation of the island.Mahebourg is
nowadays a calm coastal village, exept
on market days. However with the construction
of a waterfront, Mahebourg will surely
develop into the main tourist attraction
of the South in the years to come.
Le Morne
Further to the south is Le Morne, a near
peninsula that offers the staggering view
of Le Morne Brabant Mountain, which is
like a rock coming out of the sea. Le
Morne also host the horrible story of
runaway slaves who plunged from the top
of the mountain when soldiers came to
tell them that they were free. Le Morne
is also known for its kite surfing
spot in Mauritius.

The
East Coast
The east region of Mauritius is well known
for ile aux Cerfs. A small island, 10
minutes by boat from the small fishing
village of Trou d'eau Douce.
Ile Aux Cerfs
Off the east coast, 20 minutes by boat
from Pointe Maurice is the island resort
of Ile Aux Cerfs. Tickets
for boat transfers are available on the
spot. The island has two restaurants,
a boat-house and stretches of beautiful
beaches and a 18 hole golf course
designed by Bernhard Langer.
|
|
Belle
Mare
Has a beautiful white sandy beach and
fine bathing. The east coast, with its
white sweep of sands at Palmar, and Trou
d'Eau Douce, stretches out lazily to Grand
Port, a quaint little village by the sea
; there the beach narrows and the roads
closely follows the coastline to Mahebourg
and Pointe d'Esny with its adjoining white
sandy beach and string of bungalows. |
|
The
West Of Mauritius
The west side of the island is one of
the best spots with long sandy beaches
like Flic en Flac fringed with casuarina
trees. Not far from that region, is found
the Casela .This bird sanctuary is built
on 20 acres and features 140 different
species from all over the world.
Casela Leisure Park
Open daily, Casela Bird Park is set in
the district of the Rivière Noire,
stretches over 20 acres of land and contains
more than 140 varieties, amounting to
2500 birds.
Tamarind Falls
The Tamarind Falls are a little difficult
to reach, but it's worth the effort for
a beautiful, deep, cool bathe at the bottom
of the series of seven falls. You can
see them from the Vacoas side, if you
follow the sign from Henrietta. A tarred,
bumpy road through cane fields leads to
the Magenta and Tamarind Falls turn-off.
Tamarin
This is the surfing centre of Mauritius,
although you can go for weeks without
seeing a surfer. The character of the
place is more laid-back than Fliic en
Flac and rougher around the edges. It
has a good beach and is well situated
for most of the other sights. Salt evaporation
ponds encircle the village. Tamarin Bay
Beach is a small public beach with good
views across the river estuary to Montage
du Rempart.
Black River Gorges
The national park was founded in 1994
and is and excellent site to appreciate
the magnificent gorges of famous Black
River. The park also boasts stunning scenery
and is home to the largest forest left
on the island and features predominately
indigenous species of plants, vegetation
and local wildlife. This park serves as
a wonderful contrast to show that Mauritius
is more than just beautiful beaches and
people.

Chamarel
From the small sleepy Mauritian town of
Case Noyale leads a narrow windy road
to the coloured layers land stretching
in contrasting layers of colour, and the
patches of blue, green, red and yellow
earth are believed to be the result of
weathering. There is also the Charamel
Falls nearby.
